30/06/09 TUE - Experiment no. 1: Patterns of Circulation - GPS Mockup

Had a quick meeting at 10 am to decide our strategy for our first research experiment:

OBJECTIVE:
Collect information of movement of people inside campus and from/towards Museum Building by following them (at a safe and unsuspected distance!). Write notes about type of people entering campus, any details we pick up. We printed maps and each of us did our own survey. This is based on our idea of tracking people with GPS units, only that the GPS are ourselves!

OUTCOME:
We collected about twenty different trajectories with added notes. Once we finish compiling the information we will discuss it as a group. The campus was quite busy despite most students being away. Lots of tourist groups around and a few workers from surrounding areas using campus to have their lunch.

NEXT STEP: meeting with Mark O'Halloran tomorrow (WED) at 11:30 am at the Museum Building.

29/06/2009 MON - Meeting and Museum Visit

PARTICIPANTS: Bin Bin, Dara, Killian, Marcos and Nicky

MAIN POINTS:
- Had meeting between ourselves at 2pm, paid a quick visit to Museum Building and Trinity Campus and made Skype Call to Nicky at 4pm

- Dara presented a couple more ideas (musical performance inside building, flaneur video (multiple points of view, playing with sound through mobile phone feedback between two phones). Marcos, Killian and Bin Bin presented visual descriptions of their projects with more detail.

- During our campus visit we noticed that there are no strict borders between private and public areas. Also abundance of CCTV cameras and the fact that no one pays attention the building.

- During our Skype meeting with Nicky, he suggested that we create a Manifesto from our ideas and that we focus on the experience of the user rather than the emotion. Nicky suggested that we go and do what we are thinking. Tomorrow (TUE) we will have a go at tracking people's movements towards and from the building.

- We also scheduled a meeting with Mark O'Halloran (TBC) WED at 11:30am.

26/06/2009 FRI - Discussion of Ideas

PARTICIPANTS:
Dara, Killian and Marcos

MAIN POINTS:
- We presented our ideas so far for the project.

- Dara: 1)navigable interface focused on the audio experience of the building
2) project visual images based on audio data onto the Museum Building and make a video of it.

- Killian: track users of the building via GPS over a certain period and obtain a pattern of circulation that tells the story of the building. Possibility of using sensors to track the emotional response of users as they walk.

- Marcos: create a game played simultaneously online and in the physical world (Trinity Campus). Participants help each other to solve tasks leading to the exploration of the campus in a novel way, leading to discoveries and possible encounters with strangers, ending up in the Museum Building, where participants finish playing the game while engaging with the Museum Building through a visual and audio sensorial aids.

NEXT STEP: meeting on Monday at 2pm to discuss ideas and start focusing our project into a viable solution. Skype meeeting with Nicky staight after (3pm).

24/06/2009 WED - Inspirations

PARTICIPANTS:
Bin Bin, Killian, Marcos

MAIN POINTS:
- Each of us presented our research findings.

- Marcos: games involving public spaces and allowing for exploration of areas outside of everyday life routines. Creation of new social links, issue of trusting strangers

- Killian: use of GPS to track people's movements creating patterns that cross each other. Possiblity of using sensors combined with GPS to track people's emotional response to their geographical location.

- Bin Bin: described a similar location based game that he played in the army.

NEXT STEP:
Meeting Nicky (supervisor) on Monday. Group meeting before that.

19/06/2009 FRI - First Meeting With Nicky

PARTICIPANTS:
Nicky (via Skype call), Bin Bin, Killian, Marcos

MAIN POINTS:
- Agreed to send our individual Powerpoint slides from Final Project to Nicky. Agreed to meet next Friday (26/06/09) via Skype.

- Nicky suggested two approaches:
1) create an installation/event and later document it on the Final Project website.
2) the installation/event would be live on the website.
